Why a conventional reel for slow pitch?
Slow pitch jigging is almost always fished with a small conventional (baitcasting-style) reel, not a spinning reel. There are three reasons:
- The fall. Most slow pitch strikes come as the jig flutters down. With a conventional reel you can control the spool with your thumb and feel the line stop the instant a fish takes the jig on the drop.
- Rhythm. Slow pitch is worked in measured turns of the handle (a quarter, half or full crank per rod stroke), which is easier to judge on a conventional reel with a known retrieve per crank.
- Power. A conventional reel sits on top of the rod, so the rod’s bend and the reel’s gears work in line when a grouper tries to get back to the rocks.
