Why two speeds for slow pitch? The 3:1 low gear is for winching a big grouper or amberjack off the bottom and working very heavy jigs in deep water. Capacity note for Florida: 300 yards of 30 lb braid is fine for ledges in 150–400 feet. For deeper slow pitch with heavy jigs, where current can bow the line and use up spool, look at the 500N or the larger Valiant 2 sizes.
Setting up a Valiant for slow pitch
- Line: fill with thin PE braid (30 lb on the 300) and add a fluorocarbon leader. Thinner braid sinks faster and keeps the jig vertical in current.
- Drag: set it lower than you would for bottom fishing. Slow pitch rods are soft, and too much drag pulls hooks. Tighten with the TwinDrag as the fish comes off the bottom.
- Hand: if you pump the rod with your right hand, get a left-hand (L) model.
- Care: rinse with fresh water after every trip, back the drag off for storage, and use Accurate’s two-year service program.
What matters in a slow pitch reel
