Trolling Fishing Rods Directory

Trolling rods are the structural link between the boat, reel and fish. A good offshore trolling rod has to do several jobs at once: keep baits and lures swimming correctly, absorb the shock of a strike at trolling speed, protect leaders under drag, transfer pressure efficiently to the fish and survive constant use in rod holders, harnesses and fighting belts.

This directory covers the major offshore trolling-rod manufacturers currently relevant to bluewater anglers. The launch group is organized by country and focuses on brands with real, current trolling lines rather than generic boat rods.

Manufacturers by country

USA

  • PENN — Battalion III Boat Troll and current offshore conventional trolling rods
  • Blackfin Rods — Fin Legacy Stand-Up, Strip/Tip, Pitch and Tuna Stand-Up rods handcrafted in Florida
  • Crowder Rods — Florida-built conventional trolling and stand-up rods
  • Star Rods — handcrafted offshore trolling and big-game rods
  • Melton Tackle — custom and house-brand big-game trolling rods for tournament and long-range use

Japan

  • Shimano — Terez BW, Terez BW BFC, full-roller Uni-Butt and specialized offshore trolling rods
  • Daiwa — 25 Saltiga Trolling, Saltist Trolling and Darkwater offshore rods

Taiwan

  • Okuma — Makaira Abalone, PCH Custom Trolling and Hawaiian Custom offshore rods

Best new trolling rods for 2026

PENN Battalion III Boat Troll — NEW. PENN’s current new-arrival trolling family spans 6′ to 7′ lengths and line ratings from 15–30 lb through 80–130 lb. The series gives anglers a fresh factory option for everything from lighter sailfish and mahi trolling to heavy big-game applications.

Daiwa 25 Saltiga Trolling. Daiwa’s latest Saltiga trolling rods use Glatech hybrid construction, combining fiberglass with inner and outer graphite layers. The goal is to retain shock absorption while reducing unnecessary weight and preserving the lifting power required for tuna and billfish.

Shimano Terez BW BFC. Shimano’s current Billfish Concept rods were developed with tournament captains and pair directly with the Talica BFC reel family. Spiral X, Hi-Power X and UD Glass construction are used to produce lightweight but torsionally rigid rods for ballyhoo trolling and kite fishing.

Daiwa Darkwater. The current Darkwater offshore family is also notable because Daiwa offers technique-specific rods for sailfish, kingfish and trolling. HVF Nanoplus and X45 construction reduce weight while controlling blank twist.

What makes a good trolling rod?

  • Action: a trolling rod needs enough tip movement to keep fish pinned while still loading into a powerful midsection and butt.
  • Line class: match rod rating to the drag and line system, not merely the target species.
  • Guides: ring guides reduce weight; roller guides reduce friction under very heavy mono and sustained drag. Hybrid strip/tip systems combine both ideas.
  • Butt: slick butts are easy to move in holders; aluminum Uni-Butts and bent butts are better for heavy harness and chair work.
  • Reel seat: large two-speed reels need secure seats and strong gimbals. A premium blank with undersized hardware is still the wrong trolling rod.
  • Foregrip: long EVA or shaped foregrips help the angler control the rod when fighting from a belt or harness.

How we review trolling rods

Each manufacturer page reviews five current or representative rods in detail. We look at blank construction, action, line rating, guide train, butt and gimbal hardware, intended reel size, trolling technique, target species, Florida use, price, warranty, service and the practical differences between lighter stand-up rods and true heavy-tackle big-game rods.

New products are called out separately rather than mixed with established classics. A rod does not have to be new to be good, but anglers shopping in 2026 should be able to see which models are genuinely recent and which are proven long-running designs.

All eight manufacturer reviews are live

The directory now includes detailed reviews for all eight listed trolling-rod manufacturers, covering current factory, handcrafted and custom offshore rods from light billfish tackle through 130-class big-game systems.
