Braided line is what makes modern deep dropping work. It is far thinner than monofilament of the same strength, so it cuts through current and lets a heavy lead reach bottom at 600–1,500 feet without a huge belly in the line. It barely stretches, so you feel bites and the bottom from far below. And it packs enough line onto an electric reel to fish the deepest drops.
For deep dropping, the most useful braids are metered: the color changes every 10 meters or every 25–100 feet, so you can see how much line is out and stop the rig at the depth where the fish are, even without a line counter.

What to look for
- Metered colors: a color change every 10 m (33 ft) or every 25 ft lets you read depth straight off the line. Japanese braids also add marks every meter or every 5 meters.
- Strength: match the braid to your rod and reel class. Lighter braid sinks faster and handles current better; heavier braid gives more margin on big fish and wrecks.
- Length: electric reels hold a lot of line, so buy a bulk spool big enough to fill the reel, with plenty left over for depth and drift.
- PE rating: Japanese braids are sold by PE size, not pounds. PE 3 is roughly 50 lb, PE 6 about 80 lb and PE 10 about 130 lb, but each brand differs, so check the label.
- Carriers: 8-carrier and higher braids are rounder and smoother through guides and rollers; 4-carrier braids are often tougher against abrasion.
- Leader: braid is very visible and cuts easily on structure, so finish with a mono or fluorocarbon leader to the deep drop rig.
