Avet Conventional Reels: SX, MX, JX/LX, HX, EX and T-RX Buying Guide (2025–2026)
Review method: Researched editorial buying analysis based on avetreels.net specifications, retailer listings (CharkBait, FishUSA, TackleDirect) and dated press coverage — not personal field testing. Avet publishes no MSRPs; prices are US retailer prices. The official T-RX page could not be read during our check, so its figures come from retailers.

2025–2026 updates and current generations
2026: Avet's homepage carries a 2026 image referring to a “130 three-speed reel”. We found no text announcement, model name or specifications, so treat a 130-size three-speed (likely in the T-RX or EX family) as unconfirmed until Avet publishes details.
2025: Avet added a $25 upcharge for the T-knob power handle from 1 January 2025. Retailers now list the HXW Raptor 5/3 and original pre-G2 SX/SXJ/MXJ 6/4 MC models as discontinued or on clearance, and FishUSA marks the MX Star Drag as inactive, although it remains on Avet's site.
Current generation: G2 versions of SX, MX and JX/LX claim about 40% more drag than the previous generation, plus more line capacity, a redesigned frame, a ratcheting glide plate with positive strike stop and a knurled drag knob.
Avet company and reel-range overview
California-made lever drags
Avet Reels is based in Chatsworth, California, and machines compact lever-drag reels from 6061-T6 aluminum. Its strengths are small, powerful two- and three-speed reels, magnetic cast control for casting models, and published strike and full drag figures for each model.
Avet's naming can be confusing: the series letter gives the size (SX, MX, JX/LX, HX, EX, T-RX), the number gives the gear ratio (5.3, 6/4 two-speed, 3/S three-speed), “J” or “W” narrow or wide spool, “MC” magnetic cast control and G2 / Raptor the generation or drag tier.
How to choose
SX and MX G2 for inshore, light jigging and live bait; JX/LX for yellowtail, school tuna and heavier jigging; Raptor versions when you want more drag in the same size; HX for small big-game; Pro EXW and T-RX for trolling and stand-up on large tuna and marlin. Three-speed models add a very low gear for lifting big fish on small frames.

Specifications
9 bearings. SX6/3 Raptor Plus: 6.3/3:1, 16–17 oz, 17/26 lb. MXL6/4 Raptor: 22 oz, 21/31 lb, 50 lb/620 yd (MXL Raptor Plus 6/3 MC from about $470). JX6/3 Raptor MC: 6.0/2.8:1, 23 oz, 28/38 lb, from about $510. JX3/S Raptor MC Plus: three-speed 6/3/2:1, 24 oz, 28/38 lb. JX3/S Winch: 28 oz, 45/70 lb, triple carbon drag. HX5/2 Raptor: 29 oz, 40/50 lb. HX3/S Raptor: 5.4/2.4/1.3:1, 31 oz, 40/50 lb.
Spec cautions
Avet lists the HX5/2 Raptor low gear as 1.9:1 but the same 17 in low retrieve as the 2.4:1 HX5/2, and names the MX Raptor Plus “6/4” while listing a 3:1 low gear. One figure in each pair is probably a typo.
Verdict
The JX Raptor MC is one of the most popular compact tuna reels on the West Coast; the three-speed versions are unusual and very effective for big fish on light frames.
