Banax’s Kaigen electric reels have become a popular value choice for Florida deep dropping. Banax also makes its own battery line, the TIMAX-B (타이맥스), with Samsung SDI cells, in 8,700 mAh and 10,500 mAh versions. The catch is that TIMAX batteries are sold in Korea, and we found no official US sale. Most American Kaigen owners use a US-sold battery built with a Banax plug instead.

What Kaigen reels need
- All Kaigen models (500, 1000, 1500) run on 12V DC and come with a 9 ft (2.76 m) 12V power cord.
- Kaigen 1000: high-torque 12V motor, 45 lb max drag, 90 lb instant winding power, 160 m/min, 1,000 m of 65 lb braid.
- Kaigen 500 / 500TM: twin 12V motors (high-torque and high-speed), 880 g, 230 m/min.
Current draw (Kaigen 1000): Banax doesn’t publish it. On The Hull Truth, vendor Frigate Sales said the reel limits current to 25 A and recommended a 30 A breaker or fuse. An owner reported about 5 A under light load and up to 25 A when “cranked down tight.” Frigate Sales also said the reels perform best at about 14V from engine-charged batteries, work acceptably at 12V, and should be hard-wired (for example a Marinco or Hubbell plug with a 30 A breaker) rather than clipped on.

Voltage: Kaigen reels are 12V reels. Several US packs run at 14.8V nominal (16.8V fully charged). Frigate Sales says Kaigens perform best at about 14V, but check with your dealer that a given pack is approved for your Kaigen model before using it.
Wiring and safety
- Fuse every reel circuit. A 30 A breaker or fuse suits the Kaigen 1000’s 25 A limit.
- Use proper plugs, not alligator clips, on hard-wired boat circuits.
- Size wire for the run length, counting the full positive and negative length.
- Keep lithium packs dry and ventilated, and never charge a wet or damaged pack.
- Carry a spare charged pack on long deep drop days if you’re not on boat power.
How long will a battery last?
A rough way to estimate runtime: divide the battery’s capacity by the reel’s average draw. A 10Ah pack feeding a Kaigen 1000 that averages 5–8 A while retrieving gives roughly 1.5–2 hours of winding time. On a deep drop day, the reel spends most of its time sitting on the bottom, so that winding time spreads across many drops. Heavy leads, strong current and big fish raise the draw, so carry more capacity than the math suggests.

Banax does make its own battery, the TIMAX-B, with Samsung cells and strong protection circuits, but it’s a Korean-market product. For US Kaigen owners, the practical choices are the BatPower ProK (made for Banax), the Florida-made Abyss pack with its Banax cable, the Johnny Jigs DN-1700-NS, or hard-wiring your Kaigens to boat power with 30 A breakers.
